- Microdiscectomy : An open operation using an incision which is one to two inches long (or longer) with external visualization of the surgical field with an operating microscope.
- Open incision: cutting muscle, removing ligament, bone and joint capsule; pulling and holding over nerves for an extended period, in obtaining access to the disc.
